App Development

Sailwind is an under-construction to-do app built to be completely private. Virtually every mainstream to-do app requires an account, and saves your data to a server owned by the service provider. The advantage of this is that synchronisation between devices is effortless. The disadvantage is that it comes at a cost to privacy.

Sailwind is built for people who don’t want to make that compromise. You can use it now in your browser, where no account is needed and all data is saved in your browser’s local storage (so if you refresh your browser you will remove all your data).

Sailwind is built with a simple json export feature so you can easily take your data out of the app in human-readable format. This will load into the desktop app perfectly when it launches.

The web app is currently an MvP (a minimum viable product) and will eventually enter the second stage of development, adding timekeeping and push notifications after I’ve integrated a persistent database that is not dependent on the device’s browser.

There’s also a few UI/UX adjustments I want to make.

This page will update as progress is made. Currently Sailwind is a personal hobby project to solve a specific problem I had, but if/when it gets to a point I’m happy with I intend to release it to the world as a £10 one-time-own-it-forever piece of software.

Current Features:

  • You can add, edit, and delete entries.
  • You can move entries between lists.
  • Create, edit, delete lists.
  • Move lists between groups.
  • Create, edit, delete groups.
  • Set avatar and username – all stored locally, no account – just to personalise your app.
  • Change background colours and UI fonts.
  • Add, edit, and delete subtasks to entries.
  • Add notes to entries.
  • Tick off as completed: tasks and subtasks.
  • App records creation date and time of entries, in preparation for timekeeping and notification systems.
  • Import/export data as .json.

Dev Roadmap:

  • Persistent local storage independent of browser.
  • Refine modal behaviour (e.g. categorise settings, click outside to close, enter to save).
  • Ability to set custom colours rather than choose presets. Same with fonts.
  • Timekeeping and push notifications.

Maybe, down the line:

  • Mobile responsiveness. It is for now a desktop only app.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve tried to answer a few common questions here but if you have one unanswered, please get in touch using this form!

For first contact? Not at all! Any questions or ideas are welcome, and if desired or beneficial I’m happy to have a free 30 minute phone call to speak in more depth with you about any hopes, dreams, or worries you may have – hopefully to bring the former into fruition, and dispel the latter!
I hope, rewarding! I am passionate and caring both about you and my work, and want to help you, earnestly. To that end, I am very happy to listen to your ideas and your dreams, and help to build them.
I am also honest, and will advise where I think there may be a better way, or where something may end up being a mistake, always with your best interests in mind.
Working with me is like working with a partner, not an employee. It is a relationship of mutual and mature respect, where each of us has agency, and expertise in our field.
It is one that I hope will lead to a close working relationship, anchored by shared trust and values.
Possibly – but possibly not! What I might not know about your field, I can learn – or defer to you. What I do know about is building websites.
I enjoy new challenges, it keeps the job interesting. I understand that a lack of obvious experience in your specfice niche may be a cause for worry, but if you’re willing to take a chance on me, I am very willing to do my best by you.
The probability is high that I know of a system/solution that would indeed help you, but I’ve just never had the opportunity to use it that way before.
If I do genuinely think it is out of my scope, I’ll be honest about that. I neither wish to waste your time nor sully my reputation by over-promising.
I like to think I am fairly priced. I put a lot of care and effort into my work, and that takes time. I am however aware that we live in a time of economic strife and I am more willing than most to work around that with you.
I believe very much in honesty and so have put up as much information as I can regarding my costs on my Bespoke and Package service pages, as well as my Hosting plans, and Addons.

While I won’t haggle over the value of my work, I will very gladly help you with payment plans, should you like to work with me but find the cost prohibitive. Or perhaps agree a smaller project to start, and build in everything else at stages, later.

Website builders such as Wix and Squarespace can be a useful starting point for those on a tight budget, but they come with significant limitations. I talk about them, and AI builders, here.
