True in Law is a law blog run by a graduate, for students and enthusiasts of English law. It views the law not as dry legalease, but as the striving and faltering of human endeavor – a sacred cultural inheritance worth studying and defending.
True North Web Design delivered a mature, professionally-designed content and writing publishing system drawing on the style of old newspapers with mastheads and articles. The system is simple and intuitive to use, and gracefully scales with the growing body of publications by the author.
Project Deliverables:
- A simple and scalable publishing system for long-form academic and journalistic writing, supporting rich media like images and videos.
- A deep categorisation system, enabling granular sorting and retrieval of posts.
- Custom post types beyond a standard blog, such as for case law. Custom posts are purpose-built for the specific metadata unique to case law.
- A comment system to foster discussion and community.
- Contact forms to enable visitors to contact the author.
- Responsive web design so navigation and reading on mobiles is a pleasant experience.
- A design that is classy, traditional, newspaper-inspired, and minimalist so as not to distract from the writing.
- Support for in-text footnotes (for referencing standards like OSCOLA) which auto-scroll down to the reference (and then back up to the text you were reading). Like Wikipedia!
Performance:
True in Law was designed with a high focus on speed and optimisation, and to date (09/08/2026) is the best example True North has of a near-perfect scoring site.
Designed for Written Content:
Clean and well-spaced typography on a muted background ensure good contrast that is not too harsh on the eyes, and ample space in a narrower paragraph width prevents readers losing their line or the page looking overwhelming.
Categorisation
Posts are categorised both for easier navigation on the website but also editorial consistency between similar posts: some being education, some being essays, some being opinion, etc., to enable the writer to publish a coherent and professional body of work while best-serving the interests of the reader too.
The Mobile Experience:
As plenty of people read on-the-go these days, it was important to make the site just as pleasant to use on mobile too. Clean spacing and responsive design ensured this was the case. The following images show: part of an essay, a “further reading” section after a blog post, and an educational post on murder law.
